The "sexiest" Halloween Costume is the most empowhering costume
So a conversation that comes up a lot during Halloween season is the concept of "sexy" costumes for women. Men have regular costumes and everything is simply made sexy for women. It is infuriating to those who want to actually be scary or those who want a little less showing. Especially in a season where there are plenty of drunk pervs roaming the streets, not everyone feels safe wearing such costumes. So in spirit of one my favorite holidays, lets talk what "sexy" looks like for an empowered woman.
1. Women's iconic WW2 Symbol of Strength
Of course what better way to represent the strength and courage of women then to be the Iconic image itself? During a time when women pretended to be men to fight for their country and at the same time hold up the fort and keep the economy going by running all the companies and working in the industries that were considered "jobs for men", the iconic simple of women and their ability to overcome all obstacles is the most honorable images to represent women.
2. Police Officer
While a little more on the generic side, a police officer costume is still a very empowhering choice. Women are equally capable of being protectors as they are of being nurturers. Don't get it twisted as female cops are known to be queens at laying down the law.

Can you really have a list of empowhering costumes and leave out the Queen?? Some of the most powerful rulers in history were women. We may not hear about them as much now but they are unforgettable. Now someone had mentioned how Queens costumes come with scepters instead of swords and that is demeaning and I agree. While Queens rarely ever needed to use brute force to command respect (their presence was enough on its own) it is true that they were not shy when it came to battle. I encourage having swords for your Queen costume to show that women are just as strong in battle as they are in ruling their Queendom
4. Women in STEM
Now unfortunately (but not surprisingly) I couldn't find a lot of costumes representing women in STEM but I highly encourage looking up famous women in the fields and dressing up as them. Children, especially young girls, need to understand that your gender isn't a reason why you can't be in a field. We need our young girls to see more women representations in these areas and what better time then on Halloween.
5. Scary Carrie
Now if you're more like me, you like to get your scare on on Halloween and being an empowhered woman shouldn't keep you from that. Now there are plenty of terrifying women characters in Horror movies that we can use but one of my favorite is Carrie. While she was first bullied and harassed even at home by her mother, she proved that women are not to be messed with because even those of us that come across as weak are simply holding back our true potential and can be dangerous when it comes down to it.
6. Voodoo Magic
Going off that haunted feel, what better way to say "Don't mess with what you can't handle" then a little dark magic coming your way? Women have a powerful 6th sense and are capable of so much more then we get credit for. So lets show off our dark side and release a little magic into the dark night.
7. Astronaut
Again like in STEM, women have little to no representation when it comes to space science (yes, it is still part of STEM but I wanted it to have its own spotlight.) Show the future generations that a trip to mars isn't saved just for men but in fact women are more then capable of getting there too!
8. Women's rights
Isn't it absolutely insane how we had to FIGHT for basic human rights as if it were a privilege rather than a right?!?! Now there can be a conversation on race in this area too and I more than encourage you to represent your ancestors and their fight against discrimination as well. Show the future generations what the women of our past went through to get us the rights we so easily abuse or ignore now. Women fought for our right to education and our right to vote. So we should take full advantage of it! Show them what that fight looked like or show you're a voter....get creative and get people inspired!
9. Cleopatra
Speaking of forces to be reckoned with, Cleopatra was also known for her impressive skills in ruling and also deserves a fair chance in this list.
10. Heroines, Spies, Career Women, Moms, Demons, Monsters, etc.
There is no limit to what you can be this Halloween to be a empowhered woman! Share your ideas and concepts and why it is a great costume! Personally I like to create my own costumes through different things I buy to put together. This year I am going as the Queen of Darkness. If that's too much work, I personally love Halloweencostumes.com as the costumes are not as exposed and sexist as most places. Unfortunately, they never have my size (like every other place on the planet) so I can only admire their work. I also believe Halloweenexpress.com has some good options as well.
